One Life - Part 12
Enny gave birth to a baby gal, Bernie and Trina who had been 'trained' to take care of infants, was a great help to her. It was the couple first taste of parenthood and there were many things that they weren't familiar with or knew of and they were glad that Trina was there to advise them. Trina became a very important part of the family and they treated her like a younger sister and Bernie became her niece. Trina was grateful to them for treating her as part of their family and for giving her the warmth that she didn't receive from her own family. She would accompany them on their weekly outing and even on the occasional overseas trips. Once they went for a short shopping trip to Hong Kong. Trina was thrilled as that was the very first time she had flown on a plane. It was indeed an unforgettable experience for her.
Gradually, Trina was spending more time with them, much to the displeasure of her mother, even on her days off. In fact, she was spending most of her waking time with them, either helping out at the shop or at the residence which was just above the shop. Though the bookshop closed for business at 9 pm, Trina wouldn't leave for home till past 10 pm. She would lie to her mother that she had to stay back to check the stocks even though she didn't actually have to. Trina enjoyed her work so much that she didn't mind the long hours even though Bert and Enny had always advised her to have more rest and to spend more time with her family. Trina didn't tell them much about her family but they could sense that she didn't look forward to going home each night. Whenever they tried to find out more about the situation at home, Trina would assure them that everything was fine.
It was Bernie's one-year old birthday and Trina was invited to the family party that was being organised. Everyone was having a good time playing and taking photos with the newborn when someone cried out that Enny had collapsed in the bathroom. Enny was sent to the hospital where she was later diagnosed as suffering from leukaemia. The news came as a great shock to everybody, especially to Trina who couldn't help but blame herself for it. She had been a jinx to her family and it seemed that her 'new' family had been jinxed by her too. She apologised to Enny for the misfortune that she had brought upon her but Enny told her not to harp on such silly thoughts. Being Catholic, Bert and Enny believed that everything had happened for a reason and they prayed that a cure would be discovered soon. Somehow, the Lord decided to have Enny by his side before the cure was out and she didn't live to celebrate Bernie's second birthday.
